STAR – Strengthening Tourism Offer in the Cross-Border Area through Attracting Digital Nomads to Rural Areas

STAR is a cross-border initiative that transforms rural areas of Herzegovina and Montenegro in o attractive, sustainable destinations for digital nomads. By combining authentic local experiences,
modern digital infrastructure, and the region's rich natural and cultural heritage, the project creates new opportunities for tourism providers while encouraging longer stays and year-round
tourism.
Recognizing the growing demand for inspiring work environments and meaningful local experiences, STAR helps rural communities adapt to remote work trends by strengthening local capacities, developing tailored services, and creating innovative cross-border tourism products.

Strengthening Local Communities

STAR identifies and connects tourism providers across rural Herzegovina and Montenegro, creating a network of accommodation providers, local businesses, outdoor activity organizers, cultural attractions, and experience creators. Local stakeholders gained practical skills to better attract and welcome digital nomads, along with tailored recommendations to adapt their services to the needs of remote workers. The project will also establish two outdoor coworking spaces in inspiring rural locations—one in Herzegovina and one in Montenegro—serving as places to work, connect, and explore everything the region has to offer.

Creating a New Cross-Border Experience

STAR will bring together the best experiences from both sides of the border into a single tourism offer designed specifically for digital nomads, ranging from weekend escapes to one-week, one- month, and even three-month stays, allowing visitors to experience the region beyond the usual tourist routes.

Promoting the Region Together

The project promotes the cross-border area as an emerging destination for digital nomads through joint promotional activities. A Digital Nomad Residency Programme invites international remote workers to live, work, and share their experiences across Herzegovina and Montenegro, while a Cross-Border Coworking Conference brings together key stakeholders to present the region and explore the future of sustainable tourism and remote work.
